TFI launched The ASPIRE Challenge in October 2018; a competitive, industry-led innovation challenge designed to attract 2nd year post-secondary students to Financial Services and showcase innovation within the sector. The Challenge was built to incorporate meaningful employer interaction and feedback into every stage, providing all participants with solid work-integrated learning (WIL) experience and increasing the number of WIL opportunities available to students within the GTA.
In February 2019, 48 ASPIRE Challenge winners arrived at the inaugural Innovation and Industry Insight Weekend, and were joined 41 employers representing 8 leading Financial Services companies for the event. The highly successful 3-day conference featured employer presentations on disruption and innovation in the sector, 8 office tours, 5 innovation skills development workshops, 12 student presentations and 48 speed interviews, all designed to showcase the variety of opportunity in financial services to a new generation of talent. Participating employers – Aviva, BMO, CIBC, OMERS, RBC, Scotiabank, Sun Life and TD Bank – gained access to an untapped pipeline of second year post-secondary students learning in-demand skills, and numerous students were awarded summer placements with the businesses. Following the high level of positive outcomes generated by this new innovation in work-integrated learning, TFI intends to host The ASPIRE Challenge on an annual basis, and welcome new employers and students each year.
